Ionophores in Swine Feed

Enhancing weight gain in grow-finish pigs is top of mind for swine producers looking to increase their bottom line. To achieve this, swine producers can leverage Narasin, an ionophore feed additive used to improve growth rate and feed efficiency in growing and finishing pigs. Narasin works by targeting gram-positive bacteria in the pig’s gut promoting propionic acid production, a highly efficient energy source, increasing both weight gain and feed conversion.

Elanco’s Skycis® is the only ionophore available to U.S. pork producers allowing for consistent growth, uniform weights, and improved profitability. Comprehensive data showed that adding Skycis® to feed for longer than 65 days resulted in an increase of average daily gain, feed efficiency, and carcass yield.

By combining ionophore feed supplementation with ongoing performance monitoring, swine producers can optimize nutrient use, reduce variation, and sustain herd productivity through the finishing stage.

Do not allow adult turkeys, horses or other equines access to narasin formulations. Ingestion of narasin by these species has been fatal. Not approved for use in breeding animals because safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated in these animals. Swine being fed with Skycis (narasin) should not have access to feeds containing pleuromutilins (e.g. tiamulin) as adverse reactions may occur. If signs of toxicity occur, discontinue use.
