Managing the Sow to Maximize Potential and Performance

Success in modern sow systems depends on recognizing that each farm operates under unique conditions and challenges. While genetics provide the potential for strong reproductive performance, that potential can be limited by stressors, health challenges and management factors. Maintaining sow health is fundamental in any production system, and management decisions should focus on creating a stable, supportive environment. Sows experience numerous stressful events throughout their lifecycle—from farrowing and lactation to weaning, movement and comingling—so minimizing unnecessary stress is key to maintaining performance. Consistent attention to environmental factors such as housing conditions, cleanliness and feeding programs helps support overall herd health and productivity.

Body condition is another important factor influencing reproductive success. Both over-conditioned and under-conditioned sows can face challenges that affect breeding, farrowing and overall productivity. As a result, managing body condition requires a thoughtful feeding strategy and regular monitoring to ensure sows receive the nutrition they need to support maintenance, reproduction and lactation. Focusing on the individual sow and tracking changes over time allows producers to make adjustments that support consistent performance across the herd.

Long-term herd success also depends on strong gilt development and ongoing evaluation of farm performance. Preparing gilts to enter the sow herd requires proper acclimation to the production system, attention to health status and careful selection. At the same time, routinely monitoring herd data helps producers evaluate how management practices are influencing productivity. By reviewing trends over time and maintaining a focus on sow health, body condition and stress management, producers can identify opportunities to improve performance and support the long-term success of the herd.
