Elanco Animal Health and HIPRA have partnered to bring two avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) vaccines to the U.S. poultry market, providing new tools for producers to combat the costly poultry virus. The virus impacts broilers, layers and breeders, with particularly devastating impacts to turkeys.
The aMPV subtypes were foreign to the U.S., and after seeing the virus spread across the country, it became clear that biosecurity alone is not sufficient to combat the virus. This led Elanco to pursue a vaccine to support poultry producers and help reduce the impact of the highly contagious respiratory disease.
The vaccines, Respivac® aMPV and Hipraviar® TRT, manufactured by HIPRA, were introduced to select producers in mid-2025 via an emergency import license through field trials.
Vaccine details include:
- RESPIVAC® aMPV - Protects broilers, layers and breeders from the highly contagious virus. The vaccine is based upon subtype B, offering cross-protection against subtype A. Birds can be vaccinated at the hatchery, farm or during lay, via spray or drinking water. For prolonged immunity, chickens can be vaccinated every 9 weeks.
- HIPRAVIAR® TRT - Protect broilers, breeders and turkeys against aMPV infections. The vaccine is based upon subtype B, offering cross-protection against subtype A. HIPRAVIAR® TRT is the only inactivated vaccine with the same subtype, origin (chicken) and strain as the live vaccine, offering greater long-term protection.
In a recent Q&A with Poultry Producer, Elanco’s Dr. Scott Gustin and HIPRA’s Martina Dardi discuss the ongoing aMPV challenge, efforts to bring the new vaccines to the U.S. and share initial field results from this year’s trials.

Elanco US Inc. has been issued an import permit for the importation of HIPRAVIAR® TRT and RESPIVAC® aMPV for vaccination of US flocks.
